Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney meets with former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed in an island prison as she works to secure his release.

The first democratically-elected leader in this Indian Ocean tropical nation was ousted in 2012 and convicted of terrorism — for ordering the arrest of a judge.

Critics of his arrest, including the U.N., say Nasheed wasn’t granted due process, and that the case against him was politically motivated.

Now, Clooney — wife of actor George Clooney — is working to secure his release.
