It is a tradition that dates back for centuries. Particularly in this part of the world, where oral history is very strong, storytelling has been an integral part of culture here for many generations. As such, Al Noor Island in Sharjah wants to revive the practice by hosting the first International Storytelling Festival.
Starting from January 12, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday of January, storytellers from the Middle East, UK, Europe and Southeast Asia will be reading tales, fables and myths celebrating traditions and cultural diversity in both Arabic and English.
Through story walks, live music, singing and visual art these storytellers will entertain audiencea of all ages and create inspiration without the use of books, screens or microphones.
Marwa Obaid Al Shamsi, Al Noor Island Manager, says, “Everyone, irrespective of their age, gender, social status or cultural backgrounds, enjoys listening to a memorable story. The tradition of community storytelling has, however, been somewhat forgotten in the modern-day world. The festival is Al Noor Island’s attempt to revive the storytelling cultural movement by engaging young and adult audiences across the UAE with skilled storytellers and artists from around the world.”
