My first musical memory was sitting with my dad on Saturday mornings after breakfast watching Donnie Simpson host BET's Video Soul TV programme. He would explain the artists and genres the way most dads explain sports and athletes to their kids. I don't know if he knew that he was creating a monster at the time, but it definitely sparked an interest that grew into something like an obsession.

The first two albums I bought were Brandy's first album and Boyz II Men II on cassette. And I wore those tapes out. I would literally make my parents play them everywhere we went.

My first live show was like an open mic night when I was in the 4th grade. My school was hosting a night and they wanted the students to display talents while the parents had dinner. Some kids played instruments, some danced, and I sang a set from a group called Soul For Real.

My favourite musician is I can't say that I have one favourite musician because my taste is so eclectic! Right now I can't stop listening to Jazmine Sullivan, she's so talented and I massively enjoy listening to her music.

A song I wish I wrote would be I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston and I would only give it to her. That song will forever be a classic.

Roderick Sylvester performs on January 28 at Abu Dhabi Soul Night, Saadiyat Beach Club, Saadiyat Island. 8pm. Free Entry.
