Shah Rukh Khan teaches East Timor ‘how to love’
The tiny nation of East Timor says that Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan has taught them how to love. The country, one of the world’s newest nations and with a population of 1.5 million, lies between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Bollywood posters are plastered all over the streets and Hindi songs can be heard blasting from many houses and cars throughout the community. Hugo Garcia, a young protocol officer with the ministry of foreign affairs, told a visiting journalist that one of the reasons they love Bollywood is because of their struggle for independence, first from the Portuguese and then from Indonesian rule. “The road to our freedom [gained on May 20, 2002] was long and traumatic. We Timorese knew about love, but we had forgotten it in the midst of conflict. It was Bollywood and especially Shah Rukh Khan who taught us the real meaning of love,” he said. – IANS
