Scenes from post-Soviet Russian cities
In the 1990s, as Russia struggled to survive in the post-Soviet world, Brazilian artist Mauro Restiffe travelled to the country. He shot a series of scenes from St Petersburg and Moscow and then returned in 2015 to shoot more photos. These two sets have been placed side by side in an intriguing photo essay on show in Moscow. The images depict buildings, interiors and street scenes and illustrate how the two cities were trying to forge their own identities in different periods of change. Mauro Restiffe: Post-Soviet Russia 1995/2015 runs at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art until June 26. For more information visit www.garagemca.org.
The American century as seen on camera
The Members of Chicago’s Outlaws Motorcycle Club; a homage to the underground beat scene of New York; and a mother and child meet social services. These scenes from an American century are part of this large survey of film and photography in Canada. Images from the likes of Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus, along with works from filmmakers such as Kenneth Anger and Shirley Clarke are on display and they seek to explore the works that have “changed the image of American life”. The show also includes a number of talks. Outsiders: American Photography and Film, 1950s to 1980s runs at the Art Gallery of Ontario until May 29. for more information visit www.ago.net.
Get some satisfaction at Rolling Stones show
When did the Rolling Stones last make a good album? A long time ago, most would agree, but the juggernaut rolls on and today the band generates huge amounts of money. This exhibition in London surveys the 50-year career of the band. It takes up two floors and stretches across nine galleries, with about 500 artefacts on display, from rare instruments to iconic costumes to personal diaries. It also includes a cool recreation of a backstage area and a look at how the Globe’s theatre inspired the Bigger Bang tour. Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones runs at the Saatchi Gallery until September 4. For more information visit www.saatchigallery.com.
