Adele is back. After a quiet two years away from the limelight, with only sporadic social media posts to placate fans, the singer, 32, made a glorious return to television last night, with a hosting stint on Saturday Night Live.

As part of the comedy skit show, the Hello singer took to the stage with a monologue, in which she touched upon her weight loss, new music and US politics.

For her hosting debut, Adele wore a black tailored peplum top with trousers, with her hair worn in long, loose curls over one shoulder.

Here are the highlights from Adele's SNL monologue:

1. She kicked her monologue off by skirting around the topic of US politics

"Not only do I genuinely love this show, but it is this show that broke my career here in America, 12 very long years ago," she said. "You see, I was the guest back in 2008, when Sarah Palin came on with Ms Tina Fey ... so obviously a few million people tuned in to watch it and, well, the rest is now history.

"Now, I don't know anything about American politics ... and I don't want to say anything too political, so I will just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything," she added, with a wink and a thumbs up.

The singer performed her hits Chasing Pavements and Cold Shoulder, and was the highest-rated episode of SNL in 14 years. The day after the show aired, her debut album, 19, went to number one on the iTunes chart for the first time.

2. New music is coming, but not quite yet

"My album's not finished," she confirmed, when discussing why she is the host and not the musical guest. "And I am too scared to do both."

She then said she'd rather "put on some wigs" and "just see what happens" when getting involved with the show's sketches.

In the show, she took part in a number of sketches, including one with Kate McKinnon as a psychic set in 2019 looking forward to 2020 and a The Bachelor spoof, as part of which she also sang.

3. She spoke about her weight loss

"I know I look really, really different since you last saw me," the Rolling in the Deep singer said, touching on her weight loss, which has been much discussed by fans and media.

"But actually, because of all the Covid restrictions and travel bans, I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me," she said. "And this is the half I chose."

Adele has chosen to not directly comment on her weight loss journey, but the star reportedly embarked on a health plan last summer, following her split from husband Simon Konecki, who she shares son, Angelo, 8, with. She is thought to have lost 40kg.

4. She knows she swears too much

Adele has, in the past, been dubbed a "live TV liability", given her propensity to swear. SNL is shot live (the clue is in the name) and has strict rules when it comes to language used.

"Honestly, I don't really notice that I am doing it anymore," she said, "but to keep myself in check tonight, we have a swear jar." She then joked about the jar with SNL cast member, Kenan Thompson.

5. She paid tribute to frontline workers

"Before we really start the show, I want to say a genuine [and] sincere thank you to the frontline workers who are all here in the audience," she said. "They say that once you've been to New York, you keep a little piece of it in your heart forever, so I give it up to you, and give it up to yourselves as well."

'Saturday Night Live' is available to watch in the UAE on OSN Series First. New episodes airs every Sunday at 10pm GST on OSN Series First, episodes are also available on OSN Streaming

hall of shame

SUNDERLAND 2002-03

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

SUNDERLAND 2005-06

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.

HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19

Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.

ASTON VILLA 2015-16

Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.

FULHAM 2018-19

Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

LA LIGA: Sporting Gijon, 13 points in 1997-98.

BUNDESLIGA: Tasmania Berlin, 10 points in 1965-66
