Take five: Bands that have attempted comebacks

As Blur announces plans to bring out a new album after a gap of over 10 years, we look at five other bands that have reconstituted themselves.

We rejoiced when the kings of Britpop, Blur, got together again last year. We rejoiced even more when we heard this week that they were bringing out a new album after a gap of more than 10 years. Here are five other Britpop bands that took a second stab at stardom:

Take five… Shed Seven

They may never have reached the heights of their fellow Britpop pioneers, Blur and Oasis, but Shed Seven were still popular in their own right. The band reformed in 2007, four years after officially splitting, for a Greatest Hits tour.

Take four… Cast

Despite the success of their first three albums, this band split in 2001 after their fourth musical offering failed to light up the charts. The band reformed this year for a 15th-anniversary tour.

Take three… The Verve

One of the most creative Britpop acts, The Verve split not once but twice, having formed in 1989, split in 1995, reformed shortly afterwards and split again in 1999, two years after their most successful album, Urban Hymns. They reformed in 2008 with their fourth album, Forth.

Take two… Pulp

This band, fronted by the singer Jarvis Cocker, produced one of the biggest songs of the 1990s, Common People. After taking a long break, the band announced this year that they would return to the stage (playing various festivals) in 2011.

Take one… Suede

This critically acclaimed group is generally regarded by many as having kick-started the Britpop movement. The band (minus the original guitarist, Bernard Butler) announced earlier this year that they were to reform for a one-off charity gig.
