Sharjah concerts featuring Assala, Sherine Abdel Wahab and Nawal El Kuwaitia cancelled

The decision comes as part of a greater series of restrictions to curtail the spread of Covid-19

Two major concerts in Sharjah have been cancelled as the UAE ramps up safety measures against the coronavirus pandemic.

The first of which was the anticipated double bill of Syrian singer Asala and Egyptian pop star Sherine Abdel Wahab, due to take place at Al Majaz Amphitheatre on Friday, February 19.

The second show scrapped featured Kuwaiti singer Nawal El Kuwaitia at the recently opened Khorfakkan Amphitheatre.

The news was announced by both venues on their social media channels on Monday, February 8.

“The Assala and Sherine Abdel Wahab concert at Al Majaz Amphitheatre has been postponed until further notice, for the sake of everyone's safety, and in accordance with current Covid-19 precautions,” read the notice posted by Al Majaz Amphitheatre.

There has been no official word on the rescheduled dates for the concerts. Those who purchased tickets are eligible for a refund from the venues.

The latest moves in the emirate comes after Dubai’s government imposed a series of restrictions on public places and venues on Monday, February 1.

These included the immediate suspension of entertainment activities in restaurants and cafes, including live music performances, in addition to cutting seating capacity in various venues including cinemas, entertainment and sports complexes to 50 per cent.

Dubai Opera, located in Downtown Dubai, currently remains open with concerts operating at reduced capacity.

On Friday, February 5, Abu Dhabi reduced capacity in shopping malls to 40 per cent and limiting gyms to 50 per cent, while restaurants and coffee shops must admit no more than 60 per cent of their capacity.
