Fats Domino, a pioneer of the rock ‘n’ roll movement in the 1950s, has died in Louisiana, United States at the age of 89.

Credited with producing the first ever rock and roll record- The Fat Man- Domino sold more than 110 million records, including "Blueberry Hill" and ''Ain't That a Shame".

Known for his wide frame- he weighed more than 200 pounds- the star was one of the first honourees named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

His daughter announced the news of his passing to a local television station early on Wednesday.

"We've lowered the flag and we're playing his music all day," said Greg Harris, CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"Fats is the godfather of rock and roll," Mr Harris said. "On behalf of the people of New Orleans, I am eternally grateful for his life and legacy."

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said that Domino had added to the Louisiana city’s standing in the world.

Despite his global fame, the music legend stayed close to his home town of New Orleans, even remaining there during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

False reports that Domino had died circulated after his home was hit by floods. It was later revealed he and his wife Rosemary had been saved by a rescue boat.

Famous names from across the world also paid tribute to the star as the news of his death was confirmed.

Actor Samuel L Jackson referenced his 1956 hit Blueberry Hill.

While rapper LL Cool J said he had listened to Domino as a child.

Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson said that his music would “last forever”.
