After a cryptic clue posted in the wake of June’s surprise Craig David gig at Barasti, the Dubai beach venue has announced its headliner for its second surprise gig, taking place tonight.

De La Soul will perform tonight at Barasti's House of Whatever summer chill-out dome.

It comes after the venue teased fans earlier this week with a cryptic press release, saying: “There’s another surprise in store this week. In honour of the 4th of July, the famous beach bar will be flying in talent directly from the States. For now, lips are sealed about who this act might be.”

Barasti did offer a clue, however, revealing that the mystery guests are a hip-hop trio who will be flying in from the US, and they have previously worked with Snoop Dogg.

A poll of the finest minds in The National's office lead to three favourites emerging – one of which was Long Island trio De La Soul. New Jersey crew Naughty by Nature, of OPP fame, and Illinois' Corn Crib were the other two front-runners.

De La Soul recorded with Snoop Dogg on the 2016 single Pain.

Formed in 1987 in Long Island, New York, the trio are made up of members Posdnuos, Trugoy and Maseo. They're known for their quirky lyrics, their eclectic sampling and being a driving force behind the evolution of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop subgenres. Their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was lauded by critics.

The appearance comes hot on the heels of British R'n'B star David surprising fans when he appeared on stage on June 20, running through a medley of his hits such as Fill Me In and 7 Days.

Concert organisers are suggesting people arrive at 8pm to Barasti for the De La Soul gig tonight.
