We called it, and now the news has been confirmed: K-pop stars Super Junior are coming to Dubai.
And they're not coming alone.
It's set to be an all-singing, all-dancing K-pop mega concert, with the stars performing alongside NCT 127, JUN, RGP and Laboum at City Walk's Coca-Cola Arena on Friday, March 20.
Coca-Cola Arena is calling it the K-pop Super Concert 2020, and for good reason.
NCT 127 is the second subunit of boy band NCT. Their most recent Korean album was 2018's Regular-Irregular, and they last year released an album in Japanese entitled Awaken. The group recently released their first live album, Neo City: Seoul – The Origin. They also performed at the 2019 MTV Europe Music Awards in Spain, making history by becoming the first K-pop group to perform at the ceremony.
They'll be joined by South Korean reggae duo RGP and five-member girl group Laboum.
The news comes after the venue teased yesterday that a “super event” was coming to Dubai on Friday, March 20, with the hashtag #KpopinUAE. It wasn't long before Twitter was buzzing over who it could be. Suggestions ranged from BTS to SuperM, and many bands in between. But we were fairly sure it was Super Junior, for several reasons.
UAE fans have long been asking for the return of a full-blown K-pop concert – the last was arguably SM Town Live in 2018 – but there were no hints from organisers on which act (or acts) are coming. But we had a pretty good guess.
Super Junior have been around for quite a while. Debuting in 2005, the veteran group has endured everything from lawsuits, departing members and mandatory military service. While there were once 12 members, they're now down to nine.
Back in June, the group performed in Saudi Arabia at the Jeddah Season Festival as one of the first K-pop acts to head to the country. Their concert not only sold out but crashed the ticket website an hour later.
In October, they released their ninth studio album, Time Slip, and they are in the middle of a world tour. Super Junior will perform in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 1 before their next gig in Saitama, Japan on March 25 so, at least geographically, it seemed tricky to make a stop in Dubai.
But the real clincher was a Facebook note from the page Super Junior World Tour "Super Show 8."
In a Facebook note from August 2019, the Coca-Cola Arena is listed as a confirmed venue for a concert but without any date attached to it. As we first thought, this was the final clue that they would arrive for March 20.
