Disney has announced that the Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards will direct a separate spin-off instalment of the Star Wars franchise, scheduled for December 2016. The yet-to-be-titled film, which is being written by The Book of Eli screenwriter Gary Whitta, is being described as a stand-alone movie in addition to the next three instalments beginning with J J Abrams's Star Wars: Episode VII, to be released in December 2015. – Reuters
Big day for Kim and Kanye
The Florence mayor's office says Kim Kardashian and Kanye West rented the 16th-century Belvedere Fort for €300,000 (Dh1.5 million) for a wedding ceremony held yesterday. The build-up has been unfolding on Instagram and Twitter, as Kardashian and her entourage chronicled the pre-wedding adventures online. On Thursday, Kardashian posed with girlfriends in front of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in what looked like a bachelorette bash. On Friday, hundreds of wedding's guests enjoyed a private tour of the Château de Versailles. The wedding is a first for West and a third for Kardashian. – AP
White God wins at Cannes
The Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó's White God, a film about a mixed-breed dog who must learn to survive after a society declares mutts undesirable, won the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes International Film Festival on Friday. The Swedish film Turist, by Ruben Östlund, won the jury prize and a special prize was given to Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado's documentary The Salt of the Earth. The French feature Party Girl won an ensemble prize, while the Australian star David Gulpilil was awarded Best Actor for Rolf de Heer's Charlie's Country. – AP
Edgar Wright no longer directing Ant-Man
Edgar Wright and Ant-Man are going their separate ways. The British filmmaker said in a joint statement with Marvel that they had differences over their vision for the film, so they made an "amicable" decision to part. Paul Rudd is set to play Ant-Man, a scientist who can shrink himself to the size of an insect. Marvel says a new director will be announced shortly. – AP
