'Bird Box challenge' leads to two-car crash in US despite Netflix warning

A teenage driver drifted into oncoming traffic and hit another car after pulling a beanie over her eyes as she drove

In the latest example of why the “Bird Box Challenge” is a really bad idea, a teenage driver in Utah has caused a two-car crash while participating in the dangerous viral challenge.

It’s been reported that the 17-year-old driver drifted into oncoming traffic and hit another car, a light pole and a sound barrier after pulling a beanie over her eyes as she drove.

"Bird Box Challenge while driving … predictable result," the Layton Police department tweeted with photos of the crash.

Miraculously, the driver, a 16-year-old passenger and the other driver were uninjured in the collision. Police are recommending charges of reckless driving.

The challenge comes from the Netflix horror movie starring Sandra Bullock in which people perform everyday tasks while blindfolding themselves. Earlier this month, the movie streaming service had to issue a warning asking viewers to not attempt the dangerous stunt at home.

Despite mostly mediocre reviews, Bird Box has become one of Netflix's biggest hits with streaming platform claiming that 45 million accounts watched Bird Box in its first seven days – the biggest first week for an original film to date.
