With the Primetime Emmy Awards less than two months away, nominations for 2024's biggest TV night have been announced.

Leading the pack in the comedy categories is FX's hit The Bear with 23 nominations, improving upon the 13 for its first season last year and setting a record for a comedy series, an achievement previously held by 30 Rock, which earned 22 nominations in 2009.

Newcomer Shogun, also from FX and streaming on Disney+ in the Middle East, scored the most nominations overall, with 25 in the drama categories. The show, based on the 1975 book by James Clavell, has proven to be the breakout hit of the year so far. Originally set to be a limited series, it was renewed for a second season in May after the first's outsize success.

In the limited series category, Netflix's Baby Reindeer, inspired by a true story from its creator and star Richard Gadd, had 11 nominations.

There were numerous surprises throughout, including several nominations for the acclaimed FX comedy series Reservation Dogs, which follows four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma, which had been snubbed in previous years despite widespread acclaim and accolades from other awarding bodies. Netflix's Ripley earned several unexpected nominations as well.

Kristin Wiig's Palme Royale, meanwhile, was a surprise in the other direction, as it was tepidly received from critics and audiences when its first season was shown on Apple TV+.

Two awards darlings found themselves shut out – one being Kelsey Grammar, who returned for a reboot of his beloved series Frasier in 2023 and failed to receive a nomination despite winning five Emmys in years past. Actress Kate Winslet, meanwhile, did not receive a nomination for her HBO series The Regime, despite two previous Emmys which has helped her become one of the few actresses to earn three out of four achievements on the way to an EGOT. The series did score a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series overall.

HBO overall did not receive the Emmy love that it has in years past, with its acclaimed series The Curse, created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and starring Oscar-winner Emma Stone, also snubbed.

Fallout, based on the game series, also earned several nominations, proving once again that video game adaptations have officially come of age and are now a dominant force across television and film.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, set for September 15, will be the second ceremony that the awarding body will hold this year, after 2023's strikes in Hollywood delayed the ceremony until January.
