Sheikh Zayed Book Award announces longlist for the Literature category

Emirati author Ali Al-Shaali has made the list with his novel 'Al Hai Al Hai'

Eleven novels and two works of poetry are on the longlist for the Literature category for the 2019/2020 Sheikh Zayed Book Award. Thirteen works were selected out of 438 nominations for the 14th year of the award, with the majority of authors hailing from the UAE, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon.

A total of 1,900 nominations from 49 countries (22 Arab and 27 foreign countries) were submitted for the 14th iteration of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award across its nine categories. The two categories with the highest number of nominations were Young Author (498 nominations) followed by Literature (438 nominations).

Last year, Moroccan writer and novelist Bensalem Himmich's The Self - Between Existence and Creation won the Literature category award. The book is an autobiography in which Himmich offers glimpses into his life as a novelist and writer. He also discusses the intellectual stances he has embodied throughout his various stages of writing.

Algerian scholar Dr Abderrezak Belagrouz won the Young Author category for The Essence of Values and the Freedom of Social Concepts. Kuwaiti author Hussain Almutawaa won the Children's Literature category award for his novel I Dream of Being a Concrete Mixer. In the Literary & Art Criticism category, scholar Charbel Dagher, from Lebanon, won the award for Contemporary Arabic Poetry - the prose.

What is graphene?

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.

It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.

Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.

By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.

At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.

It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.

But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.

In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.
