Soundweaving, an interactive exhibition that is a collaboration between Hungarian textile designer Zsanett Szirmay and composer Bálint Tárkány-Kovács, opens at Tashkeel Dubai in October 26. The geometric patterns of Afghan rugs have been re-interpreted by Tárkány-Kovács, cut into tape, and then fed through a music machine, with the punched tape acting as the score.
This use of punched tape as a visual representation of sound has a long history in conceptual work, most recently, for example, in the work of the artist Hannah Rickards.
In Soundweaving, the textile pieces, exhibited with the sound machines, all make for an installation that straddles art, design and music.
First produced at Moholy Nagy Art University in Budapest, “soundweaving” uses rugs produced by female artisans under the Fatima Bint Mohammed Initiative (FBMI). It promises to be an innovative take on the crossover area between sound and visual art, and handicrafts and Conceptualism.
