The third edition of the Arabian Wings Auction is set to take place next week in Jeddah. With 218 artworks from modern and contemporary artists, the star of the show is undoubedtly an original gauche painting by Pablo Picasso painted on the back of a Cercle d’Art 1961 book slip cover.
The other lots to go under the hammer at The Gallery, in Jeddah; Arabian Wings’ artistic space include the Egyptian aritst Seif Wanly’s oil portraits on paper and an incredible watercolour from Abdel Halim Al Radwi and a work from the Syrian legend Fateh Moudarres.
Mohammed Bahrawi, the founder of Arabian Wings says: “We are proud to have such pioneering artists in our auction. At Arabian Wings we ensure on having the highest quality of artists – it’s important to mix the young and established artists to give the upcoming artists a platform to be part and proud of.”
Arabian Wings were the organisers of the first official public auction for modern and contemporary art in Saudi Arabia in December 2011. Amongst the artworks then was a Rembrandt lithograph as well as several pieces of Saudi artists such as Dia Aziz Dia, Hisham Benjabi and Mohammed Siam.
“Since 2011 – we have been raising the bar with every auction we’ve put out,” says Najlaa Felembam, the auction director and founder. “This edition is no different with names such as Seif Wanly and we couldn’t be more pleased with the artworks available for the collectors. We have new exciting systems in place and look forward to further innovating the auctions in the Kingdom.”

HAEMOGLOBIN DISORDERS EXPLAINED
Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.
Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.
The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.
The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.
A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.
