Jaddaf Waterfront (formerly known as Culture Village) is the until-recently-bare patch of land opposite Dubai Festival City near the Al Jaddaf Boat Yard, and it has now been completely transformed: there's the Versace hotel, the under-construction Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Library and Anantara hotel, as well as a smattering of low-rise apartments that sit right on Dubai Creek.
Its newest jewel is Jameel Arts Centre, which opens this Sunday and will act as a permanent contemporary arts hub for both the city and the wider region, boosting collaboration, education and creation.
To celebrate the opening, a huge art installation that has travelled from Amsterdam to Toronto, and Paris to New York is transplanting itself on Dubai Creek this Sunday night, and then next Thursday and Friday night. It's free, but registration is essential as there is limited space - you can do so here.
Waterlicht combines lights, humidity and lenses to mimic oceans, rivers and waves. The clouds of light make the participant feel like they are completely covered by water. Here's an idea of what to expect:
The work is not just about lights and lasers, it's also a thought-provoking one, reminding us of the power this element holds in an age of rising water levels.
"Waterlicht is an inspiration for the future: can we build floating cities, how much power can we generate from the movement of water? Experience the vulnerability and the power of living with water,” says the work's creator Daan Roosegaarde.
Waterlicht will be on display at Jameel Arts Centre's Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park from 7pm to 10pm, on Sunday November 11, Thursday November 15 and Friday November 16. Parking is free - follow this Google Maps link for directions to the parking.
