The US Strategic Command, which frequently uses the slogan, “Peace is our profession,” apologised for what many considered to be an insensitive tweet joking about dropping bombs while also referencing the traditional New York Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop.

"…we are ready to drop something much much bigger," tweeted the @US_StratCom account, while also showing a picture and video of stealth jets flying.

Thousands quickly took to Twitter and responded with shock at the ill-conceived joke.

Within a few hours, the tweet was taken down and replaced with an apology.

“Our previous NYE tweet was in poor taste,” the updated tweet from read in part.

Even with the apology, some still wanted clarification as to why the original tweet was allowed to be posted.

"It was scary and may have also provoked our adversaries," tweeted one critic.

Others were more direct.

"Chatter about dropping bombs is NOT funny," read another response to Stragetic Command's apology.
