A meeting between United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is being "worked on" at the United Nations General Assembly in September, the Russian Foreign Ministry said today.

The agenda for a meeting was being discussed, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The 73rd session of UN General Assembly starts on September 18, and the first weeks are marked by high-level debates.

Leaders from 193 member states will converge on New York to discuss the world's international issues, with many taking the opportunity to meet bilaterally on the sidelines.

A meeting between Mr Pompeo and Mr Lavrov would be highly scrutinised following US President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki this year.

This would be the first time Mr Pompeo and Mr Lavrov have met face-to-face since the Helsinki summit.
