Appeal for projects exploring how Arabs help shape Britain

An appeal has been launched to help find creative and cultural projects that explore the contribution of Arabs to modern Britain.

The Arab British Centre is offering £10,000 ($13,500) in funding for ambitious art projects that celebrate the achievements, history and shared experiences of the Arab diaspora in the UK.

These projects can come in the form of "visual arts, poetry and literature, film, photography, performing arts, oral histories, or inter/cross-disciplinary artforms", the charity says in its open call for the Arab Britain programme.

Projects that are based outside London and those that provide new perspectives and stories on unrepresented groups are particularly welcome, organisers say.

The group says this commission will address the lack of representation of Arab life in the UK by "supporting artists and organisations to work with their local communities to explore, document and showcase their lived experiences through creative activities".

Projects selected will be shared in a public display and also digitally as part of the upcoming Arab Britain story archive. Applications are open until April 1.

The Arab British Centre in London is a non-religious and non-political charity that aims to improve the UK's understanding of the Arab world through exhibitions, commissions, and community engagement.

Past projects include London’s Theatre of The East at Dr Johnson’s House in London, and Jarda, a co-produced workshop series and exhibition at People’s History Museum in Manchester.

Red flags
  • Promises of high, fixed or 'guaranteed' returns.
  • Unregulated structured products or complex investments often used to bypass traditional safeguards.
  • Lack of clear information, vague language, no access to audited financials.
  • Overseas companies targeting investors in other jurisdictions - this can make legal recovery difficult.
  • Hard-selling tactics - creating urgency, offering 'exclusive' deals.
