Pope Francis has donated $500,000 to aid migrants left isolated by the Mexico border looking to go to the US.

On Saturday, the Vatican said it was vital to give aid as global media coverage decreased.

The Catholic Church’s Peter Pence office is funding 27 projects among Mexican religious congregations that have asked for help to continue providing basic necessities

"In 2018, six migrant caravans entered Mexico, for a total of 75,000 people. The arrival of other groups was announced," the Peter Pence office said.

"All these people were stranded, unable to enter the United States, without a home or livelihood. The Catholic Church hosts thousands of them in the hotels within dioceses or religious congregations, providing basic necessities, from housing to clothing."

The Pope has previously criticised political leaders who tried to erect barriers to keep migrants out, leaving some in no doubt of his reference to US President Donald Trump.

"Builders of walls, be they made of razor wire or bricks, will end up becoming prisoners of the walls they build," he said.

Mexico detained nearly 400 Central American migrants who were travelling through the south of the country trying to reach the US border last week.

The US has put pressure on Mexico to stem the flow of migrants crossing the border.
