RIYADH // Saudi Arabia says it has shot down a missile fired into the kingdom from Yemen, which is engulfed in a civil war.
The Saudi military says it intercepted the missile on Thursday morning in Jizan province and later attacked and destroyed the platform that launched the missile in Yemen.
It made the announcement in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.
Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies in the Gulf, backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government, have been battling rebels in the country known as Houthis. The Houthis have access to Yemen’s supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles and have fired several across the border during the conflict.
The United Nations says the war in Yemen has killed nearly 2,800 civilians since March.
