PRETORIA // South Africa’s state prosecutors said they were “disappointed” by Oscar Pistorius’s acquittal on murder charges, but will wait before deciding whether to appeal the decision.
“We respect the court’s decision to convict the accused on culpable homicide, which is in fact a serious crime,” said Nathi Mncube, the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson.
“We are however, disappointed that we were not successful in securing a conviction on the original charge of premeditated murder, negligent discharge of a firearm and possession of ammunition,” he said in a statement.
Judge Thokozile Masipa acquitted Pistorius on the more serious charge of murder ruling that he had acted “negligently” in killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The NPA will decide whether to appeal after the sentence is handed down next month.
“It is only after a sentence has been imposed that the NPA will be able to weigh our options, whether we want to take the matter further or not,” he said outside the courtroom.

- Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
