SANAA // A Yemeni woman was shot dead yesterday and 10 others wounded when forces loyal to the outgoing president Ali Abdullah Saleh opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters in Taiz.
Rawiyah Abdulrehman was shot by a sniper on a rooftop as she was taking part in a demonstration demanding the removal of the military forces from the streets of Taiz, medics said.
The shooting came a day after relative calm in Taiz, which has seen anti-Saleh protests swell following orders by Abdurabu Mansur Hadi, Yemen's interim leader, to remove military forces from the city.
Heavy shelling and clashes in Taiz killed about 28 people in three days ending on Saturday, medics and activists said. At least two people were killed on Sunday.
The attack on the protest also came a day after Mr Hadi formed a 14-member committee to oversee the military after the recent fighting threatened to wreck the power transition deal that Mr Saleh signed last month. The committee, which is led by Mr Hadi, includes defected military commanders as well as those loyal to Mr Saleh.
The committee is designed to stop violence, remove all troops and gunmen from the streets as well as restructure and unite military forces. The opposition coalition, which said it would not form a unity government without the military committee, welcomed the appointment.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Labour dispute
The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested.
