US allies in Syria view the latest decision to withdraw troops as a "stab in the back," a war monitor said on Wednesday, after the White House announced that it has started to pull its forces from the war-torn country.
The US has informed its Kurdish partners in Syria that it will withdraw troops from Kurdish-held territory in Syria in addition to areas where battles against ISIS are still ongoing, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing anonymous sources.
The Syrian Democratic Forces have been informed by Washington that US troops will be withdrawn from areas east of the Euphrates River, where Kurdish fighters, backed by the US-led coalition, have been fighting to clear militants from the region.
The region is also home to numerous oil fields, including the Al Omar and Al Tanak oil fields, which came under US and Kurdish control after ISIS was routed from the area in recent months.
The US has also said it will withdraw from the town of Manbij, in northeastern Syria, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to enter if Kurdish forces are not removed from the area.
The SOHR said that SDF command views Washington's decision as a "stab in the back" and a "betrayal" towards the thousands of Kurdish fighters who have lost their lives in battles against the militant group.

White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders said in a statement that the “United States has defeated the territorial caliphate…we have started returning United States troops home as we transition to the next phase of this campaign”.
Later on Wednesday, the Pentagon released a statement saying it had started the process of withdrawing US troops from Syria, but appeared to oppose Mr Trump's assertion that the ISIS campaign is over.
"The Coalition has liberated the ISIS-held territory, but the campaign against ISIS is not over," Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Observatory reported clashes between ISIS and the SDF on the eastern flanks of the militant group's last toehold in Syria.

Closing the loophole on sugary drinks
As The National reported last year, non-fizzy sugared drinks were not covered when the original tax was introduced in 2017. Sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, 20 grams of sugar per 500ml bottle.
The non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.
Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.
Flavoured water, long-life fruit juice concentrates, pre-packaged sweetened coffee drinks fall under the ‘sweetened drink’ category
Not taxed:
Freshly squeezed fruit juices, ground coffee beans, tea leaves and pre-prepared flavoured milkshakes do not come under the ‘sweetened drink’ band.

Day 1, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance
Moment of the day Dimuth Karunaratne had batted with plenty of pluck, and no little skill, in getting to within seven runs of a first-day century. Then, while he ran what he thought was a comfortable single to mid-on, his batting partner Dinesh Chandimal opted to stay at home. The opener was run out by the length of the pitch.
Stat of the day – 1 One six was hit on Day 1. The boundary was only breached 18 times in total over the course of the 90 overs. When it did arrive, the lone six was a thing of beauty, as Niroshan Dickwella effortlessly clipped Mohammed Amir over the square-leg boundary.
The verdict Three wickets down at lunch, on a featherbed wicket having won the toss, and Sri Lanka’s fragile confidence must have been waning. Then Karunaratne and Chandimal's alliance of precisely 100 gave them a foothold in the match. Dickwella’s free-spirited strokeplay meant the Sri Lankans were handily placed at 227-4 at the close.
