Israel launches airstrikes in Syria, targets weapons factory: Reports

Lebanese media has reported the airstrikes hit the Hisya area near Homs

Lebanese media is reporting Israeli airstrikes on a weapons factory near the devastated Syrian city of Homs. Hassan Ammar / AP

For the second time in less than three weeks, Israel launched targeted airstrikes inside Syria on Wednesday night according to Lebanese media reports. The airstrikes hit a “weapons depot” and “factories” in Hisya area near Homs.

Lebanese media including Annahar newspaper and Lebanon 24 website reported a short while ago that Israel struck weapons depot in Hisya, while Al-Mayadeen TV close to the Syrian government reported that the airstrikes hit “a copper factory” in the area.

The airstrikes were heard in the Bekaa area in Lebanon and were followed by Israeli overflights over the Lebanese-Syrian border. While the Syrian army reportedly fired surface to air missile at Israeli jets, the Israeli army did not confirm either the strikes or being targeted.

If true, the airstrikes are the second in less than three weeks, after retaliatory strikes attacking an anti-aircraft battery on the 16th of October. They also come few hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei in Tehran today and discussed, among other issues, the Syrian war.
