Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg met Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai at Britain's University of Oxford on Tuesday and posed for a photo together.
Ms Yousafzai, 22, who like Ms Thunberg is widely known by her first name, is a student at Oxford.
She posted a photo on Instagram of the two sitting on a bench with their arms around each other, with the caption, "Thank you, @gretathunberg", and a heart emoji.
Ms Yousafzai also posted the photo on Twitter and commented: "She's the only friend I'd skip school for."
Ms Thunberg, 17, is in the UK to join a school strike in Bristol on Friday.
Both young women shot to worldwide fame after standing up for major global issues, climate change and women's education.
Ms Thunberg became a household name after skipping school in Sweden to protest against climate change, while Ms Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan after campaigning for girls to be allowed to go to school.
In 2014, Ms Yousafzai became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy of education.
She became a global symbol of the resilience of women in the face of oppression.
Ms Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 and 2020.
The pair met to discuss their activism at Lady Margaret Hall, Ms Yousafzai's Oxford college. Ms Thunberg also talked to some of the students about climate change and protest.
The college's master, Alan Rusbridger, posted a photo of Ms Thunberg on his own Instagram and Twitter accounts, saying he was honoured to host the Swede and grateful that she found time to talk to the students.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

The flights
Direct flights from the UAE to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, are available with Air Arabia, (www.airarabia.com) Fly Dubai (www.flydubai.com) or Etihad (www.etihad.com) from Dh1,200 return including taxes. The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. To get to Jomson from Kathmandu you must first fly to the lake-side resort town of Pokhara with either Buddha Air (www.buddhaair.com) or Yeti Airlines (www.yetiairlines.com). Both charge around US$240 (Dh880) return. From Pokhara there are early morning flights to Jomson with Yeti Airlines or Simrik Airlines (www.simrikairlines.com) for around US$220 (Dh800) return.
The trek
Restricted area permits (US$500 per person) are required for trekking in the Upper Mustang area. The challenging Meso Kanto pass between Tilcho Lake and Jomson should not be attempted by those without a lot of mountain experience and a good support team. An excellent trekking company with good knowledge of Upper Mustang, the Annaurpuna Circuit and Tilcho Lake area and who can help organise a version of the trek described here is the Nepal-UK run Snow Cat Travel (www.snowcattravel.com).
