Britain’s Prince Harry proposed to his American actor girlfriend Meghan Markle as they prepared a roast chicken dinner at a royal residence in London, he revealed last night.
The fifth in line to the throne went down on one knee to propose to Ms Markle some 16 months after they first started dating secretly out of the public spotlight.
He told the BBC that “this beautiful woman just sort of literally tripped and fell into my life, I fell into her life".
The couple are due to marry in spring 2018 with Ms Markle set to give up her acting career to take on the responsibilities of a full-time royal.
The couple became engaged earlier this month, his father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, said in a statement. It said 36-year-old Ms Markle has met Queen Elizabeth II, and Harry, 33, also has received the blessing of Ms Markle's parents.
Rumours had been flying about an imminent engagement announcement after Ms Markle was spotted shopping in London last week.
The US actress, best known for her role in TV legal drama "Suits", is in the process of moving to London.
According to the Clarence House statement, they will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
The couple made a brief appearance before photographers on the grounds of the palace hours after their engagement was announced.
Harry, wearing a blue suit and tie, said he was "thrilled". A beaming Ms Markle, in a white belted coat, showed off her engagement ring to photographers, which includes two diamonds that belonged to Princess Diana.
Royal officials said Harry designed the ring himself. It features two diamonds from the collection of his late mother, who died in 1997 when Harry was 12. They flank a central diamond from Botswana.
The relationship of the former soldier and the actor has been closely followed by British media despite Harry's requests to grant them a certain amount of privacy.
Exasperated by the media frenzy, the palace released a statement last year attacking the "sexism" and "racism" that Ms Markle, who is of mixed race, faced in social media and the press.

The Queen is said to be "delighted" about the engagement.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.”
Speaking during a visit to Dorset, Prince Charles added that he was "thrilled" and "very happy indeed" for his son and Ms Markle.
Harry's brother, Prince William, also put out a statement saying he was "very excited" by the news.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Theresa May offered her "warmest congratulations" to the newly-engaged couple, in a tweet on Monday morning.
Congratulations also flooded in from other senior politicians, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who said: "Congratulations to Harry and Meghan. I wish them well. I hope they have a great time and great fun together and having met Harry a couple of times I’m sure they are going to have a great deal of fun together."
Harry and Ms Markle made their first public appearance as a couple this September, when they were pictured holding hands at the Invictus Games in Canada.
Also in September, Ms Markle gave an interview to Vanity Fair magazine in which she revealed that the couple were "in love", sending speculation about their relationship into overdrive.
Ms Markle said that she and Harry were “two people who are really happy” in remarks which shortened the odds on the likelihood of another royal wedding.
The actress also opened up about the couple’s early courtship, explaining that they had been together for six months before news of their relationship became common knowledge. “I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception,” she told the magazine.
“We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us.
“It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
Before taking Ms Markle's hand in marriage, the prince sought and received the blessing of her parents.
Ms Markle's parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, released a statement on Monday saying: “We’re incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry.
“Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person.
“To see her union with Prince Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.
“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”

A feature film
At one point, two feature films were in the works, but only German director Werner Herzog’s project starring Nicole Kidman would be made. While there were high hopes he would do a worthy job of directing the biopic, when Queen of the Desert arrived in 2015 it was a disappointment. Critics panned the film, in which Herzog largely glossed over Bell’s political work in favour of her ill-fated romances.
A documentary
A project that did do justice to Bell arrived the next year: Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum’s Letters from Baghdad: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Gertrude Bell. Drawing on more than 1,000 pieces of archival footage, 1,700 documents and 1,600 letters, the filmmakers painstakingly pieced together a compelling narrative that managed to convey both the depth of Bell’s experience and her tortured love life.
Books, letters and archives
Two biographies have been written about Bell, and both are worth reading: Georgina Howell’s 2006 book Queen of the Desert and Janet Wallach’s 1996 effort Desert Queen. Bell published several books documenting her travels and there are also several volumes of her letters, although they are hard to find in print. Original documents are housed at the Gertrude Bell Archive at the University of Newcastle, which has an online catalogue.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

1970
October 26: Bahrain withdraws from a proposal to create a federation of nine with the seven Trucial States and Qatar.
December: Ahmed Al Suwaidi visits New York to discuss potential UN membership.
1971
March 1: Alex Douglas Hume, Conservative foreign secretary confirms that Britain will leave the Gulf and “strongly supports” the creation of a Union of Arab Emirates.
July 12: Historic meeting at which Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid make a binding agreement to create what will become the UAE.
July 18: It is announced that the UAE will be formed from six emirates, with a proposed constitution signed. RAK is not yet part of the agreement.
August 6: The fifth anniversary of Sheikh Zayed becoming Ruler of Abu Dhabi, with official celebrations deferred until later in the year.
August 15: Bahrain becomes independent.
September 3: Qatar becomes independent.
November 23-25: Meeting with Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid and senior British officials to fix December 2 as date of creation of the UAE.
November 29: At 5.30pm Iranian forces seize the Greater and Lesser Tunbs by force.
November 30: Despite a power sharing agreement, Tehran takes full control of Abu Musa.
November 31: UK officials visit all six participating Emirates to formally end the Trucial States treaties
December 2: 11am, Dubai. New Supreme Council formally elects Sheikh Zayed as President. Treaty of Friendship signed with the UK. 11.30am. Flag raising ceremony at Union House and Al Manhal Palace in Abu Dhabi witnessed by Sheikh Khalifa, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
December 6: Arab League formally admits the UAE. The first British Ambassador presents his credentials to Sheikh Zayed.
December 9: UAE joins the United Nations.
