TAMPA BAY, UNITED STATES // If cats have nine lives, a black and white feline from Tampa, Florida, has certainly used up one.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that when 18-month-old Bart was hit by a car earlier this month, his owner Ellis Hutson was so distraught he could not stand the thought of burying his pet.

He asked his neighbour Dusty Albritton to dig a shallow grave.

Five days later, on January 21, a matted and injured Bart emerged, meowing for food and water.

Mr Hutson contacted the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which through the Save-A-Pet Medical Fund will help cover the veterinarian costs.

Bart had surgery to remove a ruptured eye, wire his jaw shut and insert a feeding tube.

He should recover in about six weeks and he will go home with Mr Hutson.
