HONG KONG // Macau police have arrested 150 people in raids at casinos and hotels across the territory following a rash of violence that raised fears of a revival of gang warfare in the world's biggest gambling market.

Police said that 1,300 people were questioned in an exercised codenamed "Operation Thunderbolt 2012" carried out with authorities in Hong Kong and mainland China.

The operation follows a spate of murders last month in the Chinese territory, including the deaths of two mainland Chinese men at a five-star hotel and the killing of a mainland Chinese woman.

A casino boss was assaulted in another incident.

The former Portuguese colony was rocked in the late 1990s by car bombings and assassinations as triads battled for control of lucrative casino VIP rooms.
