DUBAI // An Ajman company will make the world's largest flag – in UAE colours – if Dubai wins the Expo 2020 bid next month.
The flag, which will measure 500 metres by 1,000 metres, had been planned since late last year, but the company struggled with funding the Dh11.75 million cost.
The firm, flag-maker Around the World Clocks and Gifts, will cover the cost of making it by dividing the fabric up into smaller squares, that will be sold to the public after it has been displayed.
“It will make people proud and everyone will want a piece of it,” said Najmuddeen Meera Hussein, the owner of the company.
He said the company would begin work if Dubai wins the Expo 2020 bid on November 27. It would likely be ready by the end of January.
Weighing 107 tonnes, the proposed flag is too heavy to be flown.
If made, the flag would be the world’s largest. The world record is held by Lebanon, which, on October 10, 2010, unfurled a 65,975 square metre flag. The flag, which weighs six tonnes, took 15 people about five months to sew.
Mr Hussein said the UAE flag was originally planned to be laid on the ground in Ajman, but there are now plans to have it displayed in Abu Dhabi.
Around the World Clocks and Gifts are in talks with Abu Dhabi Municipality over security permission. “Abu Dhabi is the capital,” said Mr Hussein. “It would make His Highness Sheikh Khalifa very happy.”

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
