Watch: Dubai diamond thieves brought to justice after fleeing UAE

Police captures criminals less than 24 hours after they stole a Dh300,000 gem

A pair of jet-setting thieves who stole a Dh300,000 diamond from a jeweller in Dubai just hours after arriving in the country were arrested by police.

The Asian man and woman snatched the precious stone less than four hours after flying into the emirate and then boarded a flight to India - with the female swallowing the diamond to smuggle it out of the UAE.

The duo was brought to justice in less than 24 hours, after Dubai Police launched an international operation to catch the offenders.

The thieves distracted a shopkeeper at an outlet at the Dubai Gold Souk in Deira, before swiftly making off.

When the shopkeeper noticed the lucrative item went missing, he contacted police, who arrived on the scene and combed through CCTV footage to identify the culprits.

Police in Dubai worked in tandem with Interpol and the Indian authorities to capture the criminals.

The 3.27 carat diamond was stolen on the morning of October 22.

Police said the two offenders admitted to the theft and are now facing criminal charges.
