Officials from the United Nations and US Department of State are holding workshops for UAE experts in hopes that the country will spearhead a regional satellite navigation system on par with others in the world.
The workshops will be held this week at Dubai Men's College and are co-sponsored by the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology. They will cover a wide range of applications for such a network, including aviation, marine, transit, space, agriculture, disaster planning and natural resource exploration.
The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs has organised similar workshops and international meetings since 2001 in an effort to build a dense system of global navigation systems and reference indices, but this is the first time one has been held in the Middle East.
There are six major satellite navigation systems in the world: Russia's GLONASS, the US' GPS; the European Galileo; the Chinese Beidou; and the Japanese QZSS.
