UAE students set their sights on going global

Some pretty small businesses have their eyes set on going global.

One sells solar-powered lights, while another makes bags out of jeans. A third sells stickers that can be transferred onto T-shirts.

But these firms are different than most in that they're student-run.

They were all part of an Injaz competition that recently concluded and required students to come up with new business ideas, study their feasibility, raise capital, write business plans and produce and sell products.

Glights, which was named the best student company, still only has a handful of employees and about a dozen sales. Yet it is raising more funds by selling additional shares to boost its number of investors. "Even if we had lost this competition we would continue," says Maitha al Suwaidi, 17, the Glights chief executive and a pupil at Al Salam School in Dubai.
