The UAE Space Agency took part in United Nations meetings with the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (Copuos) this week.
The agency plays a key role in the international space industry and benefits from international cooperation and knowledge.
An official delegation from the UAE, led by director general Dr Mohammed Al Ahbabi, attended the 58th meeting, in Vienna, Austria.
“This comes as part of the UAE’s commitment to closer ties of cooperation at the regional and international level towards promoting the use of outer space for peaceful purposes,” he said.
Dr Al Ahbabi said the Hope mission to explore Mars, which will be the first of the agency’s major projects, will be led by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre. The UAE will support efforts in exploring Mars for development.
“The UAE is investing in the space sector through a series of national companies that represent the nation globally,” he said.
He said the UAE was keen to build international relations through cooperation and participation at international events. The country has signed seven memorandums of understanding focused on space exploration.
Formed in 1985, Copuos consists of 77 members, including 10 Arab countries, and has scientific, technical and legal committees.
