UAE sends more relief supplies to Haiti

ABU DHABI // A further 500 tonnes of emergency relief supplies will be sent to Haiti, after a directive from Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan Humanitarian Foundation said it would immediately implement Sheikh Khalifa's orders to start a second phase of relief efforts. The foundation is purchasing relief supplies from the Dominican Republic and co-ordinating aid efforts with its government, WAM, the state news agency, reported.

Clara Martinez, the Dominican ambassador to the UAE, thanked the UAE and the foundation for assisting Haiti, where more than 100,000 people are believed to have died as a result of the earthquake two weeks ago. More than one million people are also in need of shelter. Meanwhile, the Tourism Development and Investment Company will auction a 1976 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow tomorrow to raise funds for the Haitian relief effort.

The car is among 50 items being auctioned to raise money for the Red Crescent UAE and the Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan Foundation, among others, at a black tie dinner during the Saadiyat Beach Classic golf tournament at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. @Email:newsdesk@thenational.ae
