ABU DHABI // The UAE has played a vital role in supporting ways in which women can prevent and counter violent extremism.

Through the UAE mission to the United Nations, the country is part of the discussions on the issue and it is also a supporter of the UNSCR Resolution 2242 (2015) in support of the review of UNSCR 1325 on women, peace and security.

Dr Richard Burchill, director of research and engagement at Abu Dhabi think tank Trends Research and Advisory, said the UAE was an important model as it has had significant achievements in bringing about gender equality across government and society.

“The importance of including women as equal participants in furthering peace and security is clear,” he said. “What we need is the political will to keep this agenda moving forward. As a major international donor for humanitarian causes, the UAE can also contribute its experience and knowledge for ensuring gender equality in post-conflict situations.”
