UAE orders extradition of woman to Kazakhstan

ABU DHABI // The Federal Supreme Court has ordered the extradition of a woman to Kazakhstan where she will face charges of fraud.

I Y K has denied the charges, claimed she had paid the money in question back and tried to stop her extradition.

She appealed to the court to be allowed to remain in the country and claimed that the legal process in the UAE was not fair.

But appeal judges struck down her application.

Federal Court prosecutors said she was wanted in her own country and must abide by its laws.

They said they were not required to provide evidence to the court regarding the case and the woman must be handed over to authorities in Kazakhstan.

It is believed the woman could face up to a year in jail if convicted.

Prosecutors also said she provided the court with falsified documents to show she was not on her country’s wanted list, which the court did not accept.

Federal Law states that people sought by their country can be extradited and the case does not necessarily have to be completed.

The UAE and Kazakhstan have been cooperating on extraditions since 2006 and a formal extradition treaty was signed in 2012.

The court’s ruling was made on January 7 and was announced on Wednesday.
