UAE Friday sermon: Follow the Prophet’s example in family life

Friday’s sermon will discuss the importance and the status of family in Islam.

Family is the foundation of society and essential for the spiritual growth of its members.

Allah says in the Quran: “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect”. (Al Roum: 21).

Muslims are urged to follow the example of the Prophet in treating one another, especially family.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “The best amongst you is he who is the most kind to his wife and I am the kindest amongst you to my wives.”

Allah in the Quran repeatedly stresses the importance of safeguarding the ties of the womb and that of husband and wife.

Human beings are imperfect creatures and should accept one another. The Messenger of God said: “A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes something in her character, he should be pleased with some other trait of hers.”

Conflicts are inevitable but efforts should be made to resolve them to avoid the dissolution of matrimonial ties.

The sermon also emphasises the enormous leverage parents have in raising their children and steering them into becoming responsible adults.

Parents need to take an active role in participating in their children’s lives.

Children in a family need to be treated fairly.

The Prophet once said: “Fear Allah and treat your children fairly”.
