DUBAI // Food packages will be distributed to poor and needy families across the country from tomorrow as part of the Pakistan Association Dubai's Ramadan campaign.
At least 600 boxes containing enough food to keep a family of four for the holy month have been collected so far.
"We had a target of raising enough money to deliver 600 packages and we have done that," said Rizwan Fancy, chairman of the association's ad hoc committee.
"But we are still open for people to donate more so that we can put together more packages for members of the Pakistani community that need help during Ramadan."
The association has an agreement with Lulu Hypermarket to allow distribution of the parcels.
To get a package, people must collect a coupon from the association's offices in Bur Dubai, in Oud Metha. They must then go to Lulu Hypermarket in Al Wahda, Sharjah to pick up their package.
"We spoke to a number of supermarkets to try to get more branches available for pickup but it wasn't possible logistically so we have had to use one location," Mr Fancy said.
"Most of the people this campaign will help are from Ajman and Sharjah, so the location is a good one.
"If we do get people from farther afield like Abu Dhabi then we will look into making it more convenient for them," said Mr Fancy.
"We will also start delivering some of the packages from Wednesday."
The packages contain milk, flour, ghee, tea, lentils and cooking oil.
"We would prefer to have people donate cash as that way we can make sure there is enough correct items in each package," he said.
The association will continue to hand out packages as long as their stocks last but are hopeful that members of the Pakistani community will continue to donate in the coming weeks.
"Many of us that live in the UAE are very fortunate to be able to afford the things we want to buy, but for a lot of low-income families that isn't the case.
"By donating to our campaign people can help those less fortunate than themselves," said Mr Fancy. "Ramadan is a time for people to think more of needy and disadvantaged people and do what they can to help."
Last year 450 food packages were delivered to disadvantaged Pakistani families by the association. Each food package costs Dh200 to fill and people are advised to contact the association at 04 3373632 if they wish to make a donation.
Their offices are open daily from 10am to 3pm during Ramadan.
