UAE Fatwa Q&As: Tayammum is allowed for voluntary prayer

Is it permissible to pray more than one Salah with the same Tayammum?

Tayammum is valid only for one obligatory Salah because it does not remove impurity and it does not have the same status as Wudhu (ablution). It is only allowed as an exception in specific circumstances. It has thus been reported in the Mudawwana: “no prayer shall be performed with the same Tayammum”.

As for voluntary prayers, it is allowed to use the same Tayammum for performing them whether after obligatory prayers or at other times. And Allah knows best.

In summary, Tayammum cannot be used for more than one obligatory prayer; however, it is allowed for more than one voluntary prayer. And Allah knows best.

Is there any Hadith that mentions that recreation is acceptable? Could you also offer some interpretations?

There are several Hadiths about the importance of permissible means of recreation, which emphasise their role in helping the individual regain vitality and increase his productivity. Seeking such recreation does not contradict with the essence of worship in Islam, which assigns a framework for various acts based on principles of moderation. And Allah knows best.

A relevant Hadith in this regard is one narrated by Imam Muslim in his Saheeh, concerning the account of Handhala Al Ussaydi (may Allah be pleased with him), who complained about a change in his state of heart. Addressing him, the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said, “By Him in Whose Hand is my life if your state remains the same as it is in my presence and you are always busy in remembrance (of Allah), the angels will shake hands with you in your beds and in your roads; but Handhala, time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer).” He (the Prophet) said this three times.

Similarly, according to some interpretations of Sahih Muslim, the Hadith saying: “Relax your hearts ...” relates to the fact that human beings by nature lean easily towards boredom, which is why Muslims are advised to diversify their acts of worship. This should also include attending to one’s family such as wife, children and other worldly affairs.
