UAE Fatwa Q& As: Does asthma inhaler use invalidate the fast?

  • English
  • Arabic

I have asthma. If I use my inhaler does this invalidate the fast?

Using an asthma inhaler does not invalidate the fast in itself because the amount inhaled is generally not considered a solid substance. However, if the person inhaling feels a sensation or taste in his throat or stomach, indicating solid particles of inhalant have entered his body cavity, then he should make up his fast.

Does backbiting (ghiba) and talebearing (namima) invalidate the fast?

Backbiting and gossiping does not invalidate the fast. The person doing so, however, whether fasting or not, has fallen into a grave sin as this is forbidden. It is worth noting that the Prophet Mohammed said: “Fasting is a shield. So whomsoever fasts is neither obscene nor ignorant and if someone fights or insults him let him respond by saying ‘I am fasting twice’.”
