ABU DHABI // A woman caught using her roommate’s credit card at an ATM told a court she had been lent the card, which was why she knew the pin code.
Emirati M K was accused by her roommate of stealing the card.
The roommate said she did not have any proof when she made the accusation but suspected the Emirati was responsible.
“We were four roommates for years and only when she moved in was my card stolen,” she told Abu Dhabi Criminal Court.
The judge asked whether the card had been returned to the woman.
“No and I cancelled it,” the roommate said.
The defendant was filmed using the card to withdraw cash by the CCTV camera in the ATM.
She said her roommate had borrowed money from her and gave her the credit card in exchange.
The roommate denied those claims.
M K was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison.

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
