Two killed in Dubai stunt-crash after driver loses control

DUBAI // A man and a woman who had put their heads up through the open sunroof of a 4WD died when the vehicle flipped over as the driver performed off-road stunts.

Eight people were in the Nissan Patrol when the tragedy happened at 7.15pm on Sunday at a desert area in Al Warqa'a, Dubai. The man who died was a 22-year-old Emirati and the woman was 23 and came from another Arab country.

"The driver was driving very recklessly," said a Dubai Police spokesman. "He turned right, he turned left and he was speeding. One guy and one girl had come up through the sunroof and were watching.

"Then the driver suddenly could not control the car because he was speeding so much and it turned over one full turn, and the two people died instantly. The driver had only minor injuries."

He said there had been four men and four women in the car, all aged between 18 and 30. The men were all Emiratis, while three of the women were from Arab countries and one was from Pakistan. Several of the other passengers were injured.

Two of the girls who survived, who were aged 18 and 23, are understood to have been traumatised and in a state of hysteria when the police arrived.

It is believed that another car was performing stunts close to the Nissan when the accident happened.
