AJMAN // Two men in possession of more than 20,000 tramadol tablets have been arrested in what police have described as the "biggest drug bust of the year".
The Emiratis were detained after Ajman's anti-narcotics department received a tip-off.
AR is aged 32, married and unemployed; YS, 30, is single and works for a government organisation.
"After taking all the necessary procedures and in co-operation with both Dubai and Sharjah police, we arrested them and started inspecting their homes and cars," said Col Saeed Humaid Nasser, director general of the anti-narcotics department.
Police found 11,470 tramadol tablets in their possession and 9,000 more in their car. The men also had 4.6 grams of crystal meth in the vehicle. A search of their homes uncovered 538.9g of meth, 578.3g of heroin, 23.9g of opium and 961.4g of hashish.
Col Nasser said both men confessed to possessing drugs and told police they bought them outside the country with the intention to sell them in the UAE.
Brig Ali Abdullah Alwan, director general of Ajman Police, said the seizure was among the biggest in the emirate.
He warned that police were ready and equipped to find anyone else trafficking drugs into the country.
"Parents must ensure they have complete control of their children and their behaviour," Brig Alwan urged. "You must stop them from associating with bad groups as this could lead them to taking drugs and being targeted by drug dealers."

Classification of skills
A worker is categorised as skilled by the MOHRE based on nine levels given in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) issued by the International Labour Organisation.
A skilled worker would be someone at a professional level (levels 1 – 5) which includes managers, professionals, technicians and associate professionals, clerical support workers, and service and sales workers.
The worker must also have an attested educational certificate higher than secondary or an equivalent certification, and earn a monthly salary of at least Dh4,000.
Islamophobia definition

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.
