ABU DHABI // An Indonesian woman and Indian man are charged with trying to murder her newborn girl.
Shortly after giving birth, A M handed co-accused A H, her “admirer”, a plastic bag containing the baby and asked him to throw it in the bin, Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard on Sunday.
A M was a widow, who had become pregnant after having a relationship with a Pakistani man.
While she was pregnant A H expressed a liking for the woman.
“He said he got my phone number from others and wanted to get to know me,” she said. “He always called and offered his help and assistance in any matter.”
She said after giving birth at home, she asked A H to take her to hospital.
“I cut the umbilical cord myself at home and handed him the baby so he could take her to a hospital,” she told the court.
A H, however, said she handed him a plastic bag and asked him to dispose of the child.
“When you carried the bag to the garbage, you did not feel any movement? Or hear any baby cries?” said chief justice Idris Bin Mansour.
“Yes I did,” said A H.
Municipality workers found the plastic bag containing the newborn. The baby survived.
They notified the police, who managed to recover A H’s fingerprints from the bag.
Upon arrest, he guided them to the mother and she was charged with adultery and attempted murder, while A H was charged with attempted murder.
The case was adjourned until December 21.
