Motorists have been warned to expect lane closures around Abu Dhabi airport as work ramps up on the Midfield Terminal.

The left lane on Sheikh Zayed Road approaching the city will close until 6am on July 19.

Municipality chiefs and police have urged road users to exercise caution in the area.

The Midfield Terminal - scheduled to open later this year - will house 65 aircraft gates and cover an area of about 742,000 square metres.

Etihad Airways is expected to move into the new terminal once works are complete.

Work in the larger area have been ramping up with diversions and alterations to roads commonplace over the past year.
