DUBAI // Motorists who commit minor motoring offences are now exempt from vehicle impoundment.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, ordered authorities to exempt these motorists if they do not have a history of major traffic violations.

He also ordered the release of vehicles that have been retained for half of the impoundment period, reported Wam, the state news agency.

Maj Gen Abdullah Al Marri, chief of Dubai Police, praised the decision, which is in line with the Year of Giving. The move is also aimed at encouraging motorists to keep a clean driving record.

Eligible motorists can immediately benefit from Sheikh Mohammed’s order, said Maj Gen Al Marri.

He called on motorists to be more vigilant to avoid accidents and stressed the importance of respecting traffic rules.

Reckless driving, road racing and jumping traffic lights are dangerous offences that do not fall under the exemptions in the new order, Maj Gen Al Marri said.
