Ras Al Khaimah Police have arrested an underage driver after he injured three people in a hit-and-run.

The 17-year-old did not have a driving licence and fled the scene after the accident.

The accident happened on Monday and the driver was arrested within five hours.

Police did not reveal his nationality.

One man was seriously hurt, while two others suffered moderate injuries.

“We dispatched patrols and rescue teams after we received a report about three pedestrians being hit on one of the emirate’s internal roads,” said Cap Abdul Rahman Al Shehhi, head of traffic investigations.

The Asian victims were on the roadside when the car hit them. They were taken to Khalifa Hospital.

“Traffic investigation teams with help from Al Hamra police station were able to track down the driver and arrest him,” he said.

He was arrested on a hit-and-run charge and for driving without a licence.

“He made a grave mistake when he fled the site of the accident because this way he committed two crimes,” Cap Al Shehhi said.

“We will not tolerate this behaviour and will continue to serve justice regardless of the status, nationality or gender of the offender.”

The officer urged members of the public to never abandon the victims of traffic accidents they cause.
